Extended Care Hours

In response to the many requests we’ve had from busy working parents, Northern Stage offers Extended Care hours.  By pre-arrangement, students may be dropped off an hour before their regular program start time or picked up an hour after the normal end of class. The cost for this service is $50 per week extra.

 

 


Shakespearean Wild

For students entering 9th – 12th grades and 2010 graduates
June 21 – July 2, Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $600

For the serious high school thespian, what better way to advance your acting skills than with the Upper Valley’s own professional Equity theater company?  Focusing on one of Shakespeare’s plays, students will work in depth to bring new relevance and understanding to the classic.  This class works at an accelerated pace (they have a lot to cover!) but still finds time for lots of one-on-one coaching and individual attention.
This is one of our most popular programs and early registration is highly recommended!

Dance Intensive

Ages 10 – 18
June 21 – 25, Monday – Friday, 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.
June 28 – July 2, Monday – Friday, 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $175

Following a thorough warm-up at the barre, this class will cover all of the many styles of dance utilized in modern musical theater.  These include but are not limited to: ballet, tap, jazz, modern and hip-hop/contemporary.  This class offers serious young dancers the chance to learn some new moves and further perfect their dancing skills under the tutelage of a noted Broadway professional dancer.  Though there is a lot of one-on-one coaching, this fast-paced class covers a lot of material and it is suggested that a student have at least some previous dance experience.

Voice Intensive: Private Coaching

Ages 10 – 18
June 21 – July 2
One-hour private sessions are available daily from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 
Cost: $375

It is rare in the Upper Valley that voice students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a professional musical director to develop and perfect their repertoire.  In this class, each student meets privately for one hour per day working on vocal selections and audition songs.  Our musical director will lead students through an appropriate warm-up and then accompany them as students get their songs performance ready.  Students may record their sessions so they have accompaniment to use and refer to after class.  A great way to get prepped for upcoming musical theater auditions!

College Audition Prep: Private Coaching

Ages 10 – 18
July 12 – July 16
Private sessions of one and a half hours are available daily from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 
Cost: $150

If you are planning to audition in the coming year for college theater programs or for any of thed many college theater scholarships (including the Presidential Scholar in the Arts program), don't you owe it to yourself to be as competitive as possible?  Work one-on-one with Northern Stage's Director of Education, Jody Davidson, selecting, preparing and polishing your audition pieces.  Ms. Davidson has coached several previous Presidential Scholar in the Arts finalists and has more than 35 years of experience preparing young artists for some of the most competitive theater arts programs in the country.  Student work will be videotaped daily so they can really critique their work and fully understand the direction they are given. 

This will be the only time this year that this class is offered!   

Creative Players

Ages 4 – 6   Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. 
Cost: $150
Session A: June 21 – June 25; Session B: June 28 – July 2; Session C: July 5 – July 9
Session D:  July 12 – July 16; Session E:  July 19 – July 23; Session F:  July 26 – July 30

Playing theater games is a great way to meet friends, to gain self-confidence, to focus and direct energies and imaginations, and to have fun.  Activities will encourage students to use their voices, minds and bodies to create and perform original stories, as well as improvise from favorite storybooks with help from the items in the “Traveling Theater Trunk.”  Each day integrates creative dramatic play with arts and crafts, movement/dance and music.  Each day of this program is different, so a child can take just one session or all six and not repeat activities.  Parents are welcome at the last class to join in the creative process!

Theater Alive

Ages 7 – 14, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Cost: $450
Session A: July 5 – July 16
Session B: July 19 – July 30

Theater Alive gives students the chance to expand their creativity while exploring the many artistic elements of presenting theater.  Students will spend their days creating their own play on a topic of their own choosing, then produce and act in their piece – complete with musical number – which they will present on the final afternoon of class.  The curriculum covers everything from acting, singing and dancing to technical theater, circus skills and stage make-up.  This class is so much fun, your child will never realize how much he or she is learning!  A great introduction to theater and perfect for a young person thinking about taking acting or theater production classes.

Next Stop: Broadway

Ages 7 – 14, July 5 – 16, Monday-Friday, 10:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $500

If your child loves to sing and dance, this is the class!  Students work intensely each day in musical theater –dancing, singing and acting – working to perfect the skills they need to be true “triple threats.”  Taught by experienced Broadway professionals, students will work on an interesting and challenging assortment of classic and contemporary musical numbers which they will present on the final afternoon of class. Students will come away with a deeper sense of how the musical theater actor prepares for a role.
No previous experience is required for this class.

Perfecting Audition Skills

Ages 10 – 18, July 5 – 9, Monday-Friday, 1:30 – 5:30 p.m. 
Cost: $165

Students will work on what may be an actor’s most essential skill: learning how to present a strong audition!  All participants will complete the intensive with a well-rehearsed and polished audition-ready monologue appropriate to their age and type.  This class is ideal for the teen actor preparing to audition for college acting programs, the younger actor wanting to be ready to audition for the Northern Stage Ensemble in the fall, or any young performer wanting to be well prepared for acting opportunities available in the Upper Valley, Boston or even New York.  A portion of this class will focus on the audition process at the professional level.

Learning to Direct

Ages 10 – 18,  July 12 – July 16, Monday-Friday, 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. 
Cost: $165

This class will focus on the work that goes into directing a piece of theater, including script and character analysis, staging and blocking and understanding the “spine” of a show and how it affects character motivations, as well as samplings of current directing styles.  Each student will have the opportunity to direct their peers in a piece, in addition to acting in each other’s scenes.  This class will prove invaluable to any young actor wishing to better understand how a play comes together.

Broadway Bound

Ages 8 – 18, July 19 – July 30, Monday-Friday 
Cost: $500
Group A: Ages 8 – 12, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Group B: Ages 13 – 18, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
(Groups may be further split or combined as registration warrants)

This class is recommended for the more advanced young performer with some previous training in singing, dancing or acting, or for the serious student who wants to improve skills in these areas.  This fast-paced class will cover a lot of ground while always taking the time to provide lots of one-on-one hands-on coaching.  Students will have the opportunity, if they desire, to perform in small-group and individual vocal performances as well as in larger group numbers in the final Informance.  This class is taught by professional Broadway performers who bring a wealth of real-life experience to share with their students.  This class is highly recommended for motivated, focused young musical theater performers.

Behind The Scenes: Theater Backstage

Ages 12 – 18, August 2 – August 6, Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 
Cost: $300
(Ages 10-11 with permission of instructor)

It takes dozens of very talented, creative people to produce a show, and this class will offer students the opportunity to explore some of the varied arts that go into making a play happen, including set design, stagecraft, costuming, props, stage management, marketing and lighting.  Students will gain hands-on practical experience in all of these areas and more and build their design portfolios in the process.  This is a great class for a young person who wants to be involved in theater but doesn’t necessarily want to act, or for the young actor who wants to more fully understand all areas of production.
