Caught up in the swirl of Maoist China in the 1960s, a French diplomat's obsession casts him into a tangled web of mystery, international intrigue and a star-crossed 20-year romance with a Chinese opera star. As in Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly, and based on real events, betrayal and loss of honor lead to a shocking conclusion.
