About James and the Giant Peach
Based on Roald Dahl’s story of an orphaned boy who escapes his miserable life and becomes a hero, this fantasy adventure features an infectious score by Tony and Academy Award-winning song writing duo Benj Pasek & Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, A Christmas Story, La La Land). Renowned book writer Timothy Allen McDonald captures Roald Dahl’s whimsical style and quirky dialogue, bringing to life James’s colorful family of magically overgrown insects: a mothering ladybug, a mysterious spider, a fiddle-playing grasshopper, a cowardly earthworm, and a chronically complaining centipede. Their adventures aboard a delicious peach as large as a house takes them across the Atlantic Ocean and all the way to New York City. A delight for the whole family, this musical is an enchanting fable about the power of friendship.

NEW: Audition Process

In order give each actor the time and attention they deserve, and to ensure that every member of the SMTI company has opportunities to truly shine, we are limiting the number of actors in the program to 30. Since there will be more actors who are interested than we can accept, we will have an audition process. We believe this process will serve as a valuable learning experience for our young performers.

Audition Details & Preparation
We will hold two initial auditions for James and the Giant Peach. Students interested in the program should sign up for one of the two audition dates. The early-action audition was designed for families who want to get a head start on planning their summer. Regardless of which audition you sign up for, please prepare the following:

  1. Your favorite contemporary musical theater song that features your vocal talents (2-3 minutes in length). An accompanist will be on-site, so please bring clearly marked sheet music in the correct key.
  2. 1 comedic or dramatic monologue (1-2 minutes in length).
  3. Two copies of your headshot and resume stapled together.
