Northern Stage of YES: Youth Ensemble Studio is an eight-month program designed to provide unique access to exceptional theater education for young people in grades 7-12. Company members participate in group nights at the theater with post show discussions and monthly master classes with cast members and creative teams of the main stage productions. The Youth Ensemble Studio rehearses and performs three productions throughout the course of the academic school year, culminating in a fully-produced musical on the main stage at the Barrette Center for the Arts.

Northern Stage Youth Ensemble Studio (YES) Fall Community Engagement Project

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson
Saturday, October 14, 2:00 PM at Wilder Club & Library, Wilder, VT
Sunday, October 15, 2:00 PM at Howe Library, Hanover, NH

Jaqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming is a powerful book of poetry about her childhood growing up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s. After reading the book together and discussing themes around childhood, race and family, Northern Stage’s Youth Ensemble Studio (YES) join local seniors in a cross-generational collaboration, interviewing seniors about their childhood experiences. With mentorship from Dartmouth students and Northern Stage Apprentices, YES actors adapt these stories into verse, inspired by Jacqueline Woodson’s poetic style, and will present them alongside excerpts from Brown Girl Dreaming at Wilder Club & Library on Saturday, October 14 and at Howe Library on Sunday, October 15. Chosen by Vermont Humanities to be the Vermont READS book of 2017, Northern Stage is excited to be one of the many organizations around the state to engage with this beautiful and life-affirming book. The performances are FREE, no reservations required.
