Since our season ended abruptly in March, we have envisioned numerous scenarios for the upcoming year. Due to ongoing health and safety concerns for our community, audiences, artists, and staff, we have decided to begin our 2020-21 Season with online programming this fall. Rather than just putting the productions we originally planned online, we are creating dynamic new programming that will lend itself to virtual experiences.
This fall, we will bring you Tiny Necessary Theater, a festival of four virtual works, created with and by Northern Stage artists to entertain, to provoke, and to offer our community vital artistic connection. The line-up will include Stephanie Everett’s award-winning New Works Now hit, It’s Fine, I’m Fine, The Naked Librarian by local playwright Marisa Smith, who wrote our past productions of Venus Rising and Mad Love, and two exciting new plays. We can’t tell you everything yet, but we know this Tiny Necessary Theater will bring us together in a meaningful way.
For the holidays, we will be producing It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play. This beloved American classic comes to life as a 1940s radio broadcast starring a cast of Northern Stage favorites. In the age of social distancing, we’re thrilled to offer a message of hope and love that can reach the homes of every family in the Upper Valley and beyond this holiday season.
Although we are planning for these programs to be virtual, we have not yet discounted the possibility of live performances if artist union rules allow for them. We are doing everything we can behind the scenes to bring live, in-person programming back as soon as is safely possible.
So many of you have reached out to ask how you can support Northern Stage when we have no ticket revenue. Please consider joining our community not only for our performances, but as a member of the theater. With a tax-deductible donation of $150 per person, our new Ensemble Membership replaces our regular Northern Stage subscription and will provide one complimentary ticket to each of our professional productions through May 31, 2021. Additionally, Ensemble Members will have access to booking any live events we are able to offer before the general public. We see this as a significant perk to membership, because it is likely the number of live tickets we will be able to offer may be only 15% of what has been available in years past due to new, socially-distanced regulations. Your support through the Ensemble Membership will help us chart a path to success in the year ahead and truly makes a difference to our trajectory.
We encourage those who are able to give a gift of $500 or more to join our Director’s Circle. This family of supporters makes Northern Stage’s long-term vitality and ability to positively impact the community possible. Director’s Circle Members receive ticketing benefits, invitations to Insider Events, and early access to ticket-booking, theater trips, workshops, and education classes. Thank you for your support!
