About the Program

Each summer, we hold our celebrated professional-level theater training program for students ages 12-18! This year, over the course of 5 weeks, students will rehearse and perform Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in our new outdoor performance space. This program is designed to extend the professionalism of our main stage to our young actors.

Dates: Monday, June 28 – Sunday, August 1, 2021 (Click HERE for the full production calendar)

12-18. (This rigorous training program is designed for high school students, but actors 12 and up are welcome to audition.)
Cast: 12-22 Actors
Program Cost: $1,500 per Actor
Scholarships: A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. See below for more information. 

Audition Process

Please read the following information carefully for the audition process for the 2021 Summer Shakespeare Intensive.

Program Audition

When: Saturday, April 3rd, 10AM – 1PM and Sunday, April 4th, 2PM – 5 PM
*You can choose an audition slot on either day*
Where: On Zoom

This is an unprecedented year. As you all know, the pandemic is continuing to change and evolve. We are pushing back auditions this year so that families can have a better sense of the world before committing to this program. If you are trying to plan your summer and want to talk with us in more detail, please reach out to Education Manager, Jackie Pageau, (jpageau@northernstage.org) to discuss.

Please prepare 1 comedic or dramatic Shakespeare monologue:
— It should be memorized.  
— It can be either in verse or prose. 
— It should be 90 seconds – 3 minutes in length. 
— It can be from A Midsummer Nights Dream or any of Shakespeare’s other works. Some ideas are included HERE. 

One copy of your headshot and resume will be submitted through the audition form below. Auditions will be held in 10 minute intervals.

Once your audition form has been submitted you will be contacted by our Education Manager to choose your audition time.

*Headshot Requirements (Click HERE for an Example Headshot):

— No sunglasses or hats may be worn
— Should include face and torso
— Photo should be vertical, not horizontal
— Must be high resolution – any camera or smartphone will take a quality photo, please send us the original photo as copying from social media will be a lower resolution.
— We highly encourage sending a recent photo.

Next Steps After Auditions:

By Wednesday, April 7, you will hear from Northern Stage with one of two results: YES or WAITLIST

YES: You have been accepted into the program.
WAITLIST: You have not been accepted into the program at this time. You will be added to the waitlist and contacted if space becomes available.

If you are accepted into the program, you have until April 21 to register and reserve your spot with a non-refundable $500 deposit. If the scope of this program changes significantly, the tuition will be lowered to reflect that. After April 21, that spot will be offered to the next student in line on the waitlist. Full tuition must be paid by June 1. Please make sure you are committed to the program, regardless of role, before paying tuition, as Northern Stage does not offer refunds. Character Casting Audition

When: Saturday, May 15th, 10 AM – 2 PM
Where: In Person Outside

This audition will determine which parts will be assigned to the actors who have been accepted into the Summer Shakespeare Intensive.

Please prepare the following:
–The monologue for the character you are auditioning for.
–The acting scene for the character you are auditioning for.

Monologue and scene selections will be available on April 21 to allow plenty of time to prepare. You should be familiar with your lines but do not need to be memorized. You may be asked to read sides you have not prepared so please take a look at them all. Auditions will be held as an entire group. The final cast list will be posted on or before May 22.

Scholarship Information:

We strive to make sure that our programs are accessible to all students and families. We invite you to submit a scholarship application if price is a barrier for your participation. If you are accepted into the program, you will have two weeks from the time of your acceptance to submit a $100 non-refundable deposit and your scholarship application. 

The deadline for scholarship applications is April 21, 2021.
